Filming of the clock.

Filming of the clock.

We chose to film a clock because this illustrated that time was passing by and that Connors drinking was a regular occurrence. We filmed the clock for a minute at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 to show how throughout the day he was drinking and letting life pass him by.

This clock scene would be featured when the chorus says 'Wake up' as if to say that as soon as he wakes up he's in the viscous cycle of depression and alcohol again.

The first clock we filmed:

This was the first clock we tried to film however it didn't work because it didn't have a second hand which would be the main feature so that you can visually see time passing by. We carried on filming the clock for an hour so that we could test speeding it up so that you can see the hands moving. This wasn't ideal, however, it was worth trying. This clock was also unsuccessful because it had a school plaque on show and the colours and style wasn't manly enough for it to look like Connors clock. It doesn't look spooky or unsettling which is what we were aiming for as it had to look quite dangerous and scary as it is presenting quite a haunting message.

I messaged our group and gave them the choice of two clocks to use instead. One was similar to the clock we had already filmed but it had a second hand which would improve it. However, me and the girls preferred the silver clock as the dark lighting would react well to the white face and the silver frame. This clock is a lot manlier and would suit the situation and footage surrounding it therefore this would be our second and final shoot for the clock.

This shot was unsuccessful as the lighting wasn't bright enough which meant the clock wasn't standing out enough and it wasn't creating the right tone and mood for the surrounding footage.

This lighting was created using a torch in complete darkness; we turned off all the lights in the corridor and hung the clock in a dark corner, we then shone a torch on the clock to illuminate the time passing. This footage was filmed for a minute at 12:00 which would then be sped up. This was just one of the techniques we tried when filming the clock.

We tried another technique which was pushing the clock so that it moved back and forth which was successful because it looked very daunting as if time was passing by viscously. We filmed the time at 9:00 while using this technique because that is a time that people normally drink therefore the movement could be the effect of drunkenness as this kind of effect is linked to how people see things under the influence of alcohol. This technique is successful as the shadow and contrast in lighting is visually successful as it appears quite haunting and dangerous which is the tone throughout our video as everything is quite dark and depressing.

This is a different technique we tried, we had the clock moving back and forth still however we decided to zoom in on the hands moving, this was to represent that time was looming and cannot be controlled. We then changed the angle to show the second hand passing quickly by the numbers, this is to show seconds ticking by which is out of our control. This sequence shows the danger of time and the risk of running out of time if Connors alcohol abuse continues.
Some people might not like this technique as it may be confusing as to why we have zoomed in on the hands; i feel it is clearer when we just focus the shot on the clock without altering the angle or zooming in. I think the effect of the clock moving back and forth is successful but only if we were to leave our camera shot still. Therefore i would choose the shot of the clock at 9:00.
