Me and Becky started by setting up one of the professional lights and tested the gels on the lights, however the colour wasn’t as bright as we wanted, therefore we held the gel over the camera lens while taking the photographs.
This is the difference between the red gel on the light (the photo on the left) and the red gel over the camera (the photo on the right.)
We chose the brighter colour as we wanted the photos to stand out in our ancillary tasks. The colours are significant as the red creates a dangerous tone due to its connotations and the blue is linked to depression and sorrow.
The brighter red ensures the audience is aware the colour is important and intentional. The faint colour tone of the gel on the light appears unintentional and therefore would be ignored by the audience. The gel over the light would work better in filming as the movement and location of the film would help enhance the red tones, however in the pictures the tones needed to be clearer.
The red gels work the best as the red isn't too bright which ensures it looks depressing rather than happy. The tint gives the photos something extra which makes them eye-catching which is successful. It could be argued that the red gel ruins the quality of the photos as they arent very sharp and crisp. However, the effect of the red tint creates the desired tone which therefore makes the images better without relying on the quality.
These images were taken without any gels in order to edit them incase the gels didn't work, this was useful as it ensured at least one of our images would be successful. We made our model pose using his arms and hands as this frames the body and the arms and hands are regularly used to create depression and despair within images. These poses also give different aspects to the images which attracts the audiences attention.
We made our model do similar poses throughout as we wanted to portray a definite meaning and tone within the images. By using him touching his head and looking towards the floor or to the side highlights how something is on his mind. His distressed body language present in the images with his arms crossed and hands behind his head indicates how something is bothering him and that he is depressed. His stern facial features produce the dark tone and adds to the moody atmosphere of his music.
The gels didn’t work as well as we wanted as the blue is too bright which makes it look happy not depressed like we had hoped. The red gels work better, however, they are still too bright which ruins the dangerous mood we were aiming for. We took some plain images without gels in case the gels didn’t work as we had hoped. This is useful as it allows us to edit them to try and make them work. If not we will re-do our photo shoot using darker lighting as this will make the colours less bright which would work better.
